Rhode Island: The Biggest Little State in the Union
Rhode Island is the smallest of the U.S. states located in the New England region, measuring only about 48 miles long and 37 miles wide. It is the smallest state in terms of land area, but it has a relatively high population density, with over 1 million residents. What Rhode Island lacks in size, it makes up for in cultural richness and natural beauty. Referred to as “the Ocean State,” Rhode Island is best known for its sandy shores and seaside colonial towns. Among the most iconic is the city of Newport, a popular tourist destination that draws in thousands each year looking to experience the city’s historic mansions, rich sailing history, shopping, and scenery.
Drive a short distance inland toward the head of Narragansett Bay and you find the city of Providence, the state’s capital and one of the oldest cities in the U.S. Considered a more affordable and practicable alternative to nearby Boston and New York, the city of Providence is the economic and cultural center of the state. Other major cities in Rhode Island include Warwick, Cranston, and Pawtucket.
Rhode Island has a rich history, and it played an important role in the American Revolution. The state was also a major center for the textile industry in the 19th century. It has a diverse economy that includes industries such as healthcare, education, tourism, and manufacturing. The state is also known for its seafood, particularly its clam chowder and quahogs (hard-shelled clams).
Founded almost four centuries ago, historic landmarks and attractions are abundant throughout Providence as are several prestigious universities including The Rhode Island School of Design, Johnston & Wales and Brown University, a nationally acclaimed Ivy League school.
